Beneath the Elm's Eternal Shade
Posted by Mercie Migadde November 1st, 2023
In a field where time stands tall,
An ancient elm, mighty and regal, stands in thrall,
Its roots entwined with an old man's tale,
A saga woven through life's wind and gale.
Once upon a distant time, so it seems,
A father and son, bound by shared dreams,
Planted a sapling, tender and small,
In the rich, welcoming earth, they saw it sprawl.
A pact they made beneath the azure sky,
To nurture and cherish as the years flew by,
The young lad, agile, swung with glee,
On branches strong, amidst laughter free.
Under the elm's boughs, love took its form,
Marriage vows pledged in nature's warm,
Their hearts entwined as they said, "I do,"
Beneath the elm, where dreams come true.
In the cradle of its shade, softly serene,
Children slumbered in moments pristine,
Lullabies whispered, stories untold,
Under its embrace, memories unfold.
Intimate talks shared in whispered sighs,
Secrets revealed under the elm's wise eyes,
Lessons imparted, wisdom exchanged,
Life's mysteries in conversations ranged.
Christmases adorned in twinkling light,
Beneath the elm, a festive sight,
Laughter and dance, a joyous spree,
In its shelter, hearts danced carefree.
Yet time is a thief, stealing with might,
Took his beloved, a piercing plight,
Tears cascaded down weathered cheek,
Under the elm, he found solace to seek.
Grief enveloped under its branches wide,
He sought refuge, where emotions bide,
Whispered sorrows, shared unspoken pain,
With the elm as witness, he felt the strain.
Now, as shadows lengthen in twilight's grace,
He feels life's rhythm, its final embrace,
With weathered hands, he makes his plea,
To rest eternally beneath the elm tree.
For its roots hold tales of love and woe,
Of dreams, of laughter, of life's ebb and flow,
He hopes in slumber, to join the earth,
To be part of the elm's enduring rebirth.
As the old man closes his eyes to sleep,
A legacy remains, memories to keep,
The elm, a sentinel through joy and sorrow,
Whispers tales of yesterday, hopes for tomorrow.
And so, the elm stands in stoic decree,
A witness to life's grand symphony,
Its branches reach for the sky above,
A testament to endurance, to eternal love.
